ME Elecmetal was recognized by Brinca and the Business School of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez as a leading company in the mining industry for its CO2Lite initiative, low carbon footprint grinding media developed to support mining in its decarbonization challenges.
This recognition highlights an innovation born about two years ago, when ME Elecmetal made a pioneering decision: to offer its mining customers an alternative capable of significantly reducing the carbon footprint of one of the critical inputs in the grinding process, without compromising quality, reliability, or operational performance.
With CO2Lite, ME Elecmetal was a global pioneer in offering mining a low carbon footprint grinding media. The solution enables achieving more than 60% CO₂ reduction compared to a conventional ball, maintaining the technical and operational standards required by the industry.
This milestone represents much more than a new product attribute. It represents a concrete way to address one of mining's great current challenges: reducing emissions in the value chain, especially those associated with Scope 3 of its customers.
An award recognizing applied innovation
Sustainability in mining can no longer be understood solely as a corporate aspiration. Today it is a strategic factor that impacts competitiveness, community relations, process traceability, and the ability to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements.
In this context, the recognition given to ME Elecmetal highlights a solution that connects three key dimensions:
- Industrial innovation.
- Measurable emissions reduction.
- Operational continuity.
CO2Lite was born precisely at this intersection. Its goal is not to force mining to choose between productivity and sustainability, but to demonstrate that both can advance together.
The challenge: reducing emissions in a critical input
Mining faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, not only in its direct operations but throughout its entire supply chain.
Therefore, Scope 3—that is, indirect emissions associated with suppliers, inputs, transportation, purchased goods, and materials used in the operation—becomes increasingly relevant.
Within this universe, grinding media have significant weight. They are consumed continuously, in high volumes, and are an essential part of mineral processing.
Historically, grinding balls have been manufactured through conventional steel routes, associated with more carbon-intensive processes. The challenge for ME Elecmetal was clear:
Is it possible to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of this critical input without affecting mining operation performance?
The answer was CO2Lite.
What is CO2Lite
CO2Lite is the low carbon footprint attribute applied to ME Elecmetal grinding balls.
Its operational function is the same as a traditional ball: to participate in the comminution process inside the mill. The difference lies in its origin, specifically in the steel manufacturing route used to produce it.
While a conventional ball is associated with more carbon-intensive steel production processes, CO2Lite uses a lower footprint route based on:
- Use of scrap or recycled steel.
- Electric arc furnace, or EAF.
- Manufacture of steel bars with lower CO₂e.
- Subsequent production of the grinding ball.
The innovation is not in the ball’s appearance. It is in how the steel that gives rise to it is produced.
More than 60% CO₂ reduction
The most relevant data about CO2Lite is its ability to reduce the carbon footprint by more than 60% compared to a conventional ball.
This reduction is especially significant because it applies to a permanently consumed input in mining operations. It is not a marginal improvement but a relevant decrease in a critical product for the process.
For customers, this attribute allows:
- Contributing to Scope 3 emissions reduction goals.
- Incorporating ESG criteria in procurement decisions.
- Supporting sustainability reports with concrete data.
- Reducing emissions without interfering with mill operation.
- Advancing decarbonization without sacrificing performance.

Same performance, lower footprint
CO₂ reduction is the most visible attribute of CO2Lite, but it is not enough on its own. In mining, a sustainable solution can only scale if it proves it works in real operation.
Therefore, one of CO2Lite’s central principles is to maintain the same performance, quality, and reliability as ME Elecmetal’s traditional products, without relevant differences in yield or process results.
This is the central message for customers and stakeholders:
CO2Lite reduces the carbon footprint without asking mining to sacrifice operational performance.
Industrial validation in real operation
CO2Lite has already been industrially validated with a major mining customer.
The test involved ME Ultra Grind CO2Lite balls in secondary grinding and aimed to compare their behavior against the standard ME UG ball, confirm absence of operational harm, and evaluate variables such as supply, morphology, breakage, and specific consumption.
The result was clear: UG CO2Lite was validated as a product equal or superior to the standard UG ball, with no operational harm. Additionally, the ball bed was observed in good condition, with spherical balls and no presence of breakage or deformation.
This validation is key because it demonstrates that CO2Lite is not just an environmental promise. It is an industrial solution proven in real operation.
First validated customer and supply expansion
After technical validation with a major mining customer, CO2Lite moved toward supply expansion. After validating the product, the customer extended its use to a new operation line, confirming confidence in the solution and its performance.
This milestone demonstrates three things:
- CO2Lite was accepted in real operation.
- The customer validated its technical performance.
- The solution has scaling potential in high-demand mining operations.
For ME Elecmetal, this progress confirms CO2Lite’s value proposition: footprint reduction, same performance, and technical support.
Value for mining customers
CO2Lite delivers value on three levels: environmental, operational, and strategic.
Environmental value. Enables reducing the carbon footprint by more than 60% compared to a conventional ball, contributing to the customer’s emissions reduction goals.
Operational value. Maintains quality, reliability, and performance, with no operational harm demonstrated in industrial validation.
Strategic value. Allows incorporating sustainability into procurement decisions, providing a concrete solution to advance ESG commitments and Scope 3 reporting.
In other words, CO2Lite transforms a critical grinding input into a sustainability lever for mining.
An award recognizing leadership
The recognition given by Brinca and the Business School of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez does not highlight just a product:
- It recognizes leadership.
- It recognizes the decision to anticipate an industry need.
- It recognizes the ability to develop a pioneering solution, bring it to real operation, technically validate it, and scale its supply.
And above all, it recognizes ME Elecmetal’s role as a company capable of supporting its mining customers in their sustainability challenges without losing focus on operational reliability.
CO2Lite was born about two years ago. Today, after its industrial validation, supply expansion, and external recognition, it consolidates as a concrete solution for mining with a lower footprint.
This is the change ME Elecmetal led by being a global pioneer in offering this type of solution to its mining customers.
“Two years ago we took a step that would change the conversation about sustainability in grinding media: offering mining a low carbon footprint solution capable of maintaining the quality, reliability, and operational performance our customers expect.”
