Sustainability with Concrete and Measurable Goals
Mining is fundamental to the development of modern society. Critical minerals enable progress towards a more electrified economy, drive clean technologies, and address the challenges of the global energy transition. However, this growth also brings with it an increasing responsibility: to produce more efficiently, more transparently, and with a lower environmental impact.
In this context, expectations for the industry are rapidly evolving. Customers, investors, authorities, and communities seek organizations capable of demonstrating concrete progress in sustainability, backed by data, consistent methodologies, and a long-term vision. Today, statements of intent are no longer sufficient. The industry requires clear, comparable, and measurable goals that allow ambition to be transformed into action.
As a Partner for Sustainable Mining, at ME Elecmetal we understand that sustainability must be part of the business strategy and the way we create value for our customers. Therefore, we have defined our 2030 Environmental Goals, a global roadmap that guides our decisions, strengthens our competitiveness, and reaffirms our commitment to more sustainable mining.
More than a set of indicators, these goals represent a shared vision of how we want to grow over the next decade: combining operational excellence, innovation, circularity, and emissions reduction to contribute to the development of a more efficient and resilient mining supply chain.
A Roadmap with Clear Direction
The 2030 Environmental Goals stem from a simple conviction: to generate real change, it is necessary to know exactly where we are, where we want to go, and how we will measure progress.
For this reason, ME Elecmetal defined specific greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for its main special steel liner production operations, considering scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, that is, those directly associated with production processes and the energy consumption required to operate.
By 2030, the company aims to:
Reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity by 45%.
Reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25%.
Ensure 100% traceability to the origin of critical inputs.
Both targets were developed from baseline lines defined for each operation and under internationally recognized methodologies for emission measurement and management.
Emission intensity reflects the amount of emissions generated per ton produced. In simple terms, it allows measuring how efficiently an organization produces, considering its environmental impact. Reducing this intensity means manufacturing more efficiently, better utilizing available resources, and progressively decreasing the environmental footprint associated with each product.
At the same time, reducing absolute emissions allows for real progress in reducing the total volume of emissions generated by operations.
The combination of both targets allows managing environmental performance from a comprehensive perspective, balancing growth, productivity, and sustainability.
Goals that Generate Credibility
The relevance of the 2030 Environmental Goals does not lie solely in the figures they establish, but in the ability to manage them consistently over time.
At ME Elecmetal, we believe that credibility is built on evidence. Therefore, the goals are supported by a global governance structure, verified baselines, permanent monitoring mechanisms, and recognized standards for emission measurement.
This approach allows for comparable information across different operations, geographies, and energy realities, generating a common vision of the company's environmental performance.
Furthermore, progress will be reviewed periodically to ensure that the organization stays on course to achieve the results committed to by 2030.
This management discipline is as important as the goals themselves. Because a goal only generates value when it can be measured, monitored, and managed transparently.
Decarbonization as a Driver of Transformation
The reduction of emissions represents one of the main challenges for the mining industry and its entire supply chain.
In this scenario, ME Elecmetal has defined a strategy based on concrete actions that allow for progressive and consistent progress towards meeting its 2030 Environmental Goals.
This strategy is based on three major pillars.
The first is energy efficiency. Continuously improving operational performance, optimizing processes, and adopting standards of excellence allows for reduced energy consumption and increased operational productivity.
The second is the increased use of energy from renewable sources. As the energy matrices of the countries where the company operates evolve, new opportunities arise to reduce the carbon intensity associated with electricity consumption.
The third pillar is technological innovation. The incorporation of new technologies, the modernization of processes, and the continuous search for more efficient solutions allow for accelerated emission reductions and strengthened long-term competitiveness.
The combination of these elements allows for a realistic trajectory towards meeting the defined goals, integrating sustainability and operational performance into a single strategy.
Circularity: A Competitive Advantage for Decarbonization
If decarbonization defines the destination, circularity is one of the main paths to reach it.
At ME Elecmetal, circularity is part of the essence of the business model. For decades, the company has developed capabilities to recover, reuse, and reincorporate materials into the production cycle, maximizing resource utilization and reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.
This capability represents much more than a good environmental practice. It constitutes a concrete competitive advantage that directly contributes to emission reductions and more efficient resource use.
The recovery of metallic raw materials, the valorization of by-products, and the continuous search for new opportunities to extend the useful life of materials allow for increasingly efficient operations from both an environmental and productive perspective.
For this reason, circularity occupies a central place within ME Elecmetal's sustainability strategy. Not only because it reduces environmental impacts, but because it strengthens the company's ability to develop solutions that meet the growing demands of modern mining.
Leading Change from the Value Chain
Sustainability is no longer an exclusive challenge for mining companies. Today it involves the entire supply chain and requires increasingly close collaboration between customers, suppliers, and strategic partners.
As a global provider of mining solutions, ME Elecmetal seeks to actively contribute to this transformation, generating value through products, services, and initiatives that enable progress towards more efficient and responsible operations.
The 2030 Environmental Goals are a concrete expression of that commitment.
They represent a long-term vision backed by measurable actions, a roadmap that guides investments, accelerates innovation, and strengthens the ability to respond to the environmental challenges facing the industry.
At the same time, they position ME Elecmetal as an actor seeking to contribute to raising the environmental standards of the mining value chain, demonstrating that it is possible to combine growth, competitiveness, and sustainability.
“The 2030 Environmental Goals reflect our conviction that sustainability must be managed with the same rigor as any other strategic business priority. Having clear and measurable goals allows us to move forward with direction, strengthen our capacity for innovation, and contribute concretely to more sustainable mining for future generations.”
